Within the extensive group of auto-immune diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis, fatigue can be a major issue. 

There is no one reason why fatigue is such a major problem.  It is possible that a combination of the pain, the extra effort required to do basic things and sometimes even the medication, may all contribute.  Fatigue is not just feeling tired.  It is beyond that – you might feel exhausted even if you haven’t visibly exerted yourself in any way. 

Unfortunately, in our busy lifestyles, often we do not have the luxury of resting during days when fatigue is affecting us.  It may be that you have a family to look after, animals to care for, a demanding job.  The worry of not being able to cope and meet your responsibilities often makes you feel worse, and the cycle continues.  Many of us will battle on, fighting sometimes just to walk around in what feels like gloop draining energy from our bodies.  But there is a danger that if you ignore the fatigue and push on, other things will start going wrong, minor infections may set in, colds may appear out of nowhere, you may get mouth ulcers – the list could go on.  So it makes sense to take a little time out when fatigue sets in to try and deal with it, re-energise and prevent ourselves suffering from other conditions as a consequence.

Some people resort to stimulants such a caffeine, but this will only mask the problem, and could in fact make it worse as you push on through when ordinarily you wouldn’t be able to.  If you can spare 20-30 minutes then a Reiki self-treatment will give you a boost of energy that won’t cause you to harm yourself in other ways.

You need to be attuned to practise Reiki, although you do not need to go beyond level one to apply healing treatments to yourself.  Depending on what method you study, you will be provided with a list of hand positions for different parts of the body, which are applied to each area for ideally 3 to 5 minutes, less if your time is short.  You may be advised to use between 12 to 20 different positions, or even come up with a set of your own that works best for you – there are no set rules.

However, to get a real energising treatment, along with the actual application of Reiki, listen to music.  There are many CD’s and MP3 downloads available that are specifically targeted at Reiki treatments, and most will change songs at the end of 3 or 5 minutes so that you don’t have to look at a watch, but can concentrate on your treatment.  And while you are listening, really concentrate on your breathing.  Oxygen provides energy, and the use of correct breathing cannot be underestimated.  If you can learn to breathe deeply with the music, and to focus and apply Reiki for 20 or 30 minutes then this will really get your body and mind singing.  Enough and more to get you through your day.  Even if it is ‘Methotrexate Monday’ or something similar.
